Alexandra Pitt (b. 1973, Hobart) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves fluidly across drawing, printmaking, painting, and mixed media. Her work explores the emotional landscape shaped by a personal narrative, inspired by a deep connection to place and stories from a family lineage extending six generations in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian environment is central to her process, serving as both subject and emotional counterpart. Her artwork often emerges from a dreamlike register where fragments of recollection, atmosphere, and sensory impression gather and disperse.
Dreamy and poetic, her artmaking seeks to distil the essence of her own experience in the landscape. Through line, layered mark-making and a poetic response to material, she explores how personal and inherited histories become embedded in the land, the figure and in the echo of inherited and collected objects.
Alongside her studio work, Pitt has spent more than twenty-five years teaching visual art, including a long-standing role as Arts Coordinator and Senior Art Teacher at Fahan School. Education forms a vital part of her creative life; the exchange of ideas with young artists keeps her practice open, curious, and continually renewed. This dual commitment, to making and to mentoring, shapes a practice that is at once personal, reflective, and quietly expansive.
Since 1994, Pitt has exhibited extensively, predominantly with Handmark Gallery in Hobart. Her work is held in private collections in Australia and overseas and has received ‘Highly Commended’ awards in The Bridge Prize (2025), the Bay of Fires Art Prize (1999), and the Eskleigh Art Award (1999)
